Chronically elevated glucocorticoid (GC) levels alter cognition and increase cardio-metabolic disease risk. Negative feedback suppression of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, including at the hippocampus, maintains low/basal circulating GC levels.
